Hair Instagram 101: Content

Now the fun part really begins! Your feed is a curated assortment of photos and videos, mainly of your work. The good news, is the hard part is already over, your client is finished and ready to go–– but not until you get some photos! A quick 3-5 minutes can give you days of content if you use it wisely. Here are some tips for making the most of your work and filling your feed!

Photos + Videos

Find an area of your workplace with good lighting and minimal clutter– this spot should be one you will consistently be shooting photos. Many hairdressers opt for a blank wall, as you can see in the examples below from our Ambassadors. Creating consistency is key to a nicely flowing feed. Keep in mind, people want to follow accounts that look beautiful and inspire them, so following these easy tips is a great way to catch someone’s eye!

Be sure to catch various angles of your work for multiple types of photos such as the front, sides, and back of the head. Closeups are great too to focus on texture! Once you’ve taken photos, if time allows, take some short videos–some popular types of videos and GIFS include Boomerang and Slow Motion.

Lighting is crucial! Keep in mind, if you’re a colorist, lighting can have a deep impact on the way your work translates on camera. A ring light is an affordable investment if you’re going to photograph clients in the evening.

Just like you found your own style with hair, you’ll find your own style with social media as you fill your feed and find what works best for you.

Another great way to engage your audience, is to provide information pertinent to your post such as formulas, brands used, or your clients hair history. Keep in mind you will have both clients and hair dressers following you, so include information that could be helpful to both parties, such as the timing.

The final step in posting a piece of content, is to optimize it with tags, hashtags, locations, and ideal timing.
