TIPS for Long Lasting Pastels

Lucille Javier is a colorist at the Sally Hershberger Salon in New York City. She is known for her playful, creative colors– especially dreamy pastel shades. During our last visit to New York a couple of weeks ago, we were lucky enough to see her work in action!

Lucille believes glossing prior to direct dyes is KEY. Here’s how she went about this Sheer Opal Watercolor look.

Who What Wear editor, Aemilia Madden, was our model for the day. Lucille has already pre-lightened her at a previous time, so we had a blank canvas to start on!

GLOSS AND ROOT FORMULA

10/81 Wella Colortouch with 9t and a little 9n Shades EQ + Olaplex No. 1

All formulas were mixed with Wella Colortouch Emulsion 6% and are in similar tonal families; blue, violet, and rose.

For the pre-lightened hair, Lucille used Solaris mixed with Well Extra Cool Blonde and 40vol with Olaplex No.1. She also balayaged to achieve a cool toned level 9.

To create the pastel tones, Lucille used Manic Panic and Pravana with Olaplex No.2 to dilute the direct dyes to pastel tones while giving the hair a mini treatment. Before applying, she also added No. 2 roots to ends and combed though, then applied direct dyes over without rinsing. She does this to make the hair more manageable while choosing sections, using No. 2 as a detangler.

For creative colors Lucille always selects at random, placing colors wherever they inspire her.
